My kids’ birthdays are three weeks apart, which to some might seem ideal in the joint-party circuit . . . BUT . . . they are different genders. And while that little detail might not have been a big deal in their younger years, they both have very strong opinions of how they want their birthdays to be now. Here are just a few ways we’ve kept the peace and our sanity with the solo birthday party.
Dr. Seuss Party
When my kids were younger, they both LOVED Dr. Seuss books and given our Seussical last name, I knew we had to do this party at some point. Popular gender-neutral book series like Dr. Seuss, Corduroy, or Eric Carle offer a lot of food and activity theming options.
I’ve over at Houston Moms Blog sharing a story about what my son saw when we went to the arcade. Read it here.
When my kids were younger, I always hosted joint birthday parties. Since their birthdays are three weeks apart, that always made it easier on me. BUT my kids are different genders, which can make finding theme difficult. In the past, we have done Dr. Seuss, a Frozen Campout, and a Route 66 Car & Sock Hop {check back next week for more on our gender-neutral birthday parties!}. This year, we are going glam and glory with a SUPERHEROES & SUPERSTARS theme. I will confess, though, my kids actually will have separate parties this year {because I found an awesome Superstar package for the girl}. I do, however, think these two themes could work well together since both can be set against an urban/downtown backdrop – superheroes and superstars both love life in the city! I have also started a tradition of doing a joint birthday photo session with the vision of lining a room in my house with canvases from each year. We’ve come a long way from Dr. Seuss! *sniff, sniff*
